How volume guarantees work with Infinite Volumes
On an Infinite Volume, the volume guarantee (sometimes called
space guarantee
) determines how much space is allocated from the aggregates associated with the Infinite Volume for its data constituents.
The volume guarantee determines whether the Infinite Volume is thick provisioned or thin provisioned.
•
Thin provisioning allocates physical space only as it is needed.
If the aggregates associated with the Infinite Volume do not have enough available space, writes might fail.
•
Thick provisioning allocates physical space immediately, regardless of whether that space is used for data yet.
Volume guarantee is configured using the
Thin Provisioned
property of the volume.
It is persistent across storage system reboots, takeovers, and givebacks.
You typically configure the guarantee when you create the Infinite Volume, but you can change the setting later.
The default provisioning approach for an Infinite Volume depends on where it is created:
•
An Infinite Volume created through System Manager uses thin provisioning by default.
•
An Infinite Volume created through the command line uses thick provisioning by default.
Irrespective of the provisioning approach an Infinite Volume uses, its namespace constituents always use thick provisioning. Space is allocated on an aggregate for the full size of the namespace constituent, reducing the free space on the affected aggregate regardless of whether space is used for data.
